【耳をすっぽり包んでくれるよ】パタゴニア『レンジ・イヤーフラップ・キャップ』が凄い。

冬のフィールドで長時間釣りをしていて、何が辛いって…それは「耳」なんです。

首周りは外気の冷たさから護るギアはいくつか出ているので気温に応じて対応出来るのですが、顔周りって限られてしまいます。

ニット帽などで頭は保温出来る…耳は「リツール・ヘッドバンド」等で温める事が出来るのですが、頭、耳、首、とそれぞれに分けて防寒する面倒もある。

目は偏光レンズを付けていますし、顔周りが大変なのです。それを簡単にカバーしてくれたのが、このキャップ。

『レンジ・イヤーフラップ・キャップ』。この形状キャップは各アウトドアメーカーからリリースされている優れもので冬のファッションアイテムとしても人気のキャップ。

数年前に-20℃の沖で釣りをした際に、キルトタイプのイヤーフラップ・キャップで釣りをした際は、耳や頭は抜群に保温されて心地よかったのですが、船長や仲間からの魚の棚や呼び声が聞こえ難くて困った場面がありました。

「船は厳しいかも…」そんな思いからオフショアでの使用は避けてきました。

昨年12月に北海道の河川に入った際に、再び『レンジ・イヤーフラップ・キャップ』を着用。

フライフィッシングでの釣りだったのですが、ルアーゲームに比べて移動も少なく、どちらかといえば、フライをキャストして流れでじっとしているスタイルだったから、この『レンジ・イヤーフラップ・キャップ』を選択して正解でした。

だから行動範囲が少ないし、あっちにも、そっちにも早々動かない。

いつか来る魚からのコンタクトに集中し、川沿いに立ち続けるスタイルなのです。

船の様に船長や仲間からの指示もないし、聞こえなくても構わない。黙ってフライを流している事がどれだけ楽しかったか。
また集中出来て没頭する事が出来たのでした。

とにかく温かい。首周りに入ってくる冷気も妨げられ『レンジ・イヤーフラップ・キャップ』と偏光レンズ、ネックゲイターで完璧だったのでした。

予想以上に温かくてフィールドに適したキャップ。ファッショントレンドでも人気の様ですが、私はフィールドで是非使ってもらいたいとお勧めします。

しかし。ヒグマの気配を気にしながらのフライフィッシングだったので、釣りに集中する中でも、周囲にはチェックして下さいね。

When you’re fishing long hours in winter conditions, the toughest part isn’t your hands or your body—it’s your ears.
There are plenty of layers and gears to protect your neck and core from the cold, so you can adjust depending on air temperature. But when it comes to your face, the options are surprisingly limited.

A knit beanie keeps your head warm, and your ears can be protected with something like a retool headband. Still, having to insulate your head, ears, and neck separately is a hassle.
On top of that, I’m always wearing polarized sunglasses, so the area around my face gets crowded fast. That’s where this cap really shines.

This style of ear-flap cap is released by many outdoor brands and has become popular not only as winter fishing gear but also as a fashion item.
A few years ago, I once fished offshore in temperatures around -20°C, wearing a quilted ear-flap cap. It kept my head and ears incredibly warm and comfortable—but I struggled to hear the captain calling out water depth and fish activity. That experience made me think, “This might be tough on a boat,” and I avoided using this type of cap for offshore fishing ever since.

Last December, however, I wore the Range Ear Flap Cap again while fishing a river in Hokkaido.

Cold air was blocked from sneaking in around my neck, and combined with polarized lenses and a neck gaiter, the setup felt complete.

This cap turned out to be far warmer than expected and perfectly suited for real fishing conditions. It may be popular as a fashion trend, but I strongly recommend using it out in the field where it truly belongs.

That said—since I was fly fishing while keeping an eye out for Hokkaido brown bears, even while fully focused on fishing, make sure you stay aware of your surroundings.
